LANDMARK PREWAR |  GUT RENOVATION

A dramatic gut renovation transforms a residence at One Fifth Avenue into a modern classic. Custom crown mouldings, radiator cabinetry, divided-light double-hung windows, and built-in corner window seat give the ethereal all-white living room a classic sense of structure. The prism-shaped entry hall’s dramatic wall covering, polished brass door hardware, and bold chevron-pattern floor create a sense of arrival while preserving the privacy of the apartment’s living spaces.

CONSTRUCTION OF LUXURY POP-UP RETAIL ENVIRONMENT

The award-winning design firm Roman and Williams tapped Best & Company to execute their ambitious plan for New York City’s first brick-and-mortar actualization of goop.com—Gwyneth Paltrow’s popular online fashion catalogue/cookbook/beauty bar/advice site. In the space of just a few weeks, our crews worked hand-in-hand with the R + W creative team to create a branded façade and transform a raw, characterless commercial shell in Manhattan’s Time Warner Center into a luxurious pop-up retail boutique evocative of a stylish New York apartment modeled after the actress/lifestyle brand creative director’s own Tribeca residence.

LANDMARK PREWAR | GUT RENOVATION

A three-bedroom, three-bath co-op in Manhattan’s iconic Eldorado gets a renovation that honors is history and its Central Park views.  Best & Company worked with the designer and homeowner to overhaul the prewar apartment’s dark, dated interior without erasing its period details: Mouldings, hardwood floors, windows, walls, millwork, and plaster all underwent extensive renovation. The kitchen’s marble range hood and pronounced mouldings, fabricated in Best & Company’s own millwork shops, lend a dramatic touch. Custom built-ins organize interior spaces, making beautiful use of all available space. Handsome materials and expert execution result in a timeless, comfortable interior.

LOFT APARTMENT |  GUT RENOVATION

A smart layout, high-tech mechanical systems, and organic materials redefine this luminous duplex apartment, located on the top two floors of an 1866 building that once served as stables for the American Express Company.

Oak-plank floors with a rich, tung-oil finish bring warmth to the gut-renovated interior, configured to capture all available light. A cabled steel-and-oak staircase connects the informal, lower-level living space to the new Henrybuilt kitchen, customized with high-gloss lacquer panels on the ceiling and pantry cabinetry. A second living space on the upper level—with an integrated fireplace and media wall—functions as a destination for more formal entertaining. Energy-efficient glass doors open up to the landscaped terrace, taking full advantage of the city views.

LOFT APARTMENT |  GUT RENOVATION

A smart layout, clever storage, high-functioning work/play areas, and health-conscious design materials bring comfort and ease to a family-friendly urban loft.

For an urban family that needed more space, a move to the suburbs was not a solution: Instead, they expanded their horizons by purchasing a pair of apartments located on two levels of the six-story, zinc-clad addition that rises from the Porter House, a converted 1905 warehouse in Manhattan’s historic Meatpacking District.

PREWAR APARTMENT |  GUT RENOVATION

Classical proportions and impeccable craftsmanship restore elegance to a Sutton Place residence.

Best & Company fabricated and installed new doors, base mouldings, and cornice trim to enhance the entry hall’s classical proportions. Our master craftsmen paved the three-tiered space with hand-selected limestone and marble.

COOPERATIVE |  GUT RENOVATION

Custom millwork and built-ins create a harmonious link between old and new in a prewar landmark.

Custom mouldings and doors crafted in Best & Company’s own woodworking mills restored character to the gut-renovated interior. The geometric motif on the raised-panel doors pays homage to the building’s Art Deco lineage. Painting walls and woodwork the same color creates a sense of continuity that makes the room feel larger and more luminous.

MAIN STAIRCASE | KIPS BAY DECORATOR SHOW HOUSE

For Kips Bay Decorator Show House 2014, an important annual fundraiser for New York’s Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club, Best & Company was proud to serve as the general contractor for New York interior designer John Douglas Eason. His dramatic transformation of the landmarked limestone staircase, in the north wing of McKim, Mead & White’s Romanesque Revival townhouse, transformed the mansion’s austere main artery into an intimate art gallery, with the addition of hand-painted wallpaper, metallic ceiling, dramatic Ingo Maurer chandelier—and a little help from the scaffolding we installed to reach the double-height 32-foot-tall ceiling.

LOFT APARTMENT |  GUT RENOVATION

The loft’s clean lines are echoed in the custom-fabricated marble mantel, embellished with basket wired tile. Made-to-measure solid walnut bookshelves with doored under cabinets for extra storage evoke a modern version of the classic reading alcove in the open-plan living space.

The open kitchen keeps the cook close to family and guests during meal prep. In the dining area, adjacent to the open kitchen, our artisans crafted and installed a recessed bar with open shelving above and a trio of shaker-style doors below.

EIGHT-BEDROOM HOUSE | RENOVATION AND RESTORATION

A 1925 Georgian gets a sensitive rehabilitation that honors its past as well as its present. Beyond the re-pointed brick facade, the restored interior’s traditional millwork and plaster are elevated by a collection of modern lighting and a cool, era-spanning palette. In the kitchen, a solid slab of textural, leather-finished White Fantasy quartzite tops the handsomely grained walnut-base island and counter. The hard Brazilian stone is favored by cooks who wish to combine the stain and etching resistance of granite with the beauty and light-reflective qualities of softer, more vulnerable white marble.

PREWAR APARTMENT |  GUT RENOVATION

This apartment is meant to evoke the era of the late 1920s in which it was built, with architectural details that replicate the original, but with a more loftlike floor plan and European style.  To achieve that sentiment, rooms were reconfigured and adorned with paneling and mouldings, cabinets and custom closets created, and fine finishes including marble, brass, and Caesarstone applied.
